Howls of Ebb (RIP) and Khthoniik Cerviiks operate at the fringes of extreme metal, not so much in terms of barbaric intensity but definitely in terms of warped melodic sensibilities and unconventional song structures. Unlike bands who operate in this spectrum that are “painful” (if rewarding) to listen to such as Jute Gyte and Aevangelist, though, these songs rip, twist, and pummel in satisfying ways both immediately and upon repeated listens. This is unsettling in all of the best ways.
